About the Tutor

Steve Cornelius is an Englishman who, some decades ago, came to Australia for 12 months then forgot to go home. He had fallen in love with France at the age of 15 after tasting his first croissant in a frankly rather grotty hotel round the back of Paris’s Gare du Nord. Four minutes later he also fell in love with the French language, when he asked the hotel proprietor for more croissants, in his (then) schoolboy French, and she not only understood but smiled and brought more. A lot more. This was enough to propel him into the study of French language, literature and society at the Universities of Reading (England) and Toulouse (France). He still bears the scars.

Later, Steve studied Linguistics at Macquarie University, majoring in Phonetics with the sole objective of ensuring your French accent will be the most authentic in northern Sydney. He has taught English to French-speakers, French to English-speakers, Phonetics to trainee speech therapists, and Computer Programming to aspiring geeks and nerds.

Steve believes language and linguistics are (a) the most useful and flexible tool in humanity’s toolbox and (b) fun. He thinks that after our 8-week gallop through the basic French you need for survival, you will say “Non, je ne regrette rien”.
