About the Tutor

Born and raised in Newcastle, England, Steve Cornelius came to Australia in his mid-20s for 12 months then forgot to go home. He had fallen in love with France and its language at the age of 15 on a school trip to Paris, his first venture outside Britain. This was enough to propel him into the study of French language, literature and society at the Universities of Reading (England) and Toulouse (France). In France, he has lived, worked, studied and travelled widely.

Later, Steve earned a degree in Linguistics at Macquarie University, majoring in Phonetics. His teaching of French includes a few helpful, easily understood concepts from first-year university Linguistics. He has taught English to French-speakers, French to English-speakers, Phonetics to trainee speech therapists, and Computer Programming to IT professionals.

Steve believes language and linguistics are the most useful and flexible tool in humanity’s toolbox and also fun. His aim is to give course participants knowledge that goes beyond the basic French they need for survival.
