"My name is Jo and I’m from India. Our family migrated to Australia 27 years ago with two little children and 4 suitcases!! I wanted to be a nurse and teacher from the age of 5. I grew up in a remote village in India with no electricity or running water, and my mother was a very posh British lady ( I’m adopted), and an amazing teacher. I grew up in two very different cultures, and that’s been the story of my life ever since. The village had two hospitals and as children my friend and I were given total freedom to roam around the hospitals, to meet the patients, to watch surgeries and even carry newborn babies which set me off wanting to be a nurse. As soon as I left school I did my nurses training but never worked until we migrated to Australia. It was very hard settling into the new life but everyone was so friendly and helpful and with all the encouragement here I am now a teacher and nurse. I have loved facilitating and meeting students from across the globe and finding something common with each person. I am really looking forward to helping our future nursing staff to understand patient’s suffering and pain and to become person centred carers."
