Pottery on the Wheel

Discover the therapeutic and rewarding art of shaping raw clay into beautiful, functional ceramic pieces. Pottery on the Wheel is an immersive, hands-on pottery course designed to guide you through the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing and freehand ceramic construction.

In a friendly, relaxed studio environment, you will discover how to centre, throw, and shape clay to create your own collection of useful items, including bowls, mugs, vases, and unique vessels.

Who Is This Course For?

Our studio welcomes a diverse range of creative individuals, including:

• Complete Beginners: Anyone looking to learn pottery from scratch with step-by-step guidance.
• Art Teachers: Educators seeking practical, hands-on professional development (PD).
• HSC & Fine Art Students: Students looking to refine their technical skills or enhance their major body of work.

To ensure maximum hands-on practice, each student is allocated their own pottery wheel for the duration of the class. Additionally, all professional glaze and firing costs are fully included in your course fee.

Class Details & What to Bring

To ensure personal attention and plenty of studio space, this class is strictly limited to 9 students. Places fill quickly, so we recommend booking early to secure your wheel.

Please bring the following items to your first session:

• Studio Gear: An old towel (pottery is a beautifully messy process!).
• Safety: Covered footwear is mandatory to work in the ceramics studio.
• Materials Fee: $35 in cash payable directly to the trainer at your first lesson to cover the cost of your premium clay for the entire 8-week course.

Meet Your Instructor: Victoria De Aboitiz

Learn from a dedicated ceramicist with a deep, international background in traditional and contemporary clay work. Victoria De Aboitiz brings over eight years of studio practice to the classroom, having formally studied ceramics in Córdoba, Argentina, before establishing her own independent studio practice.

Victoria’s approach to ceramics is deeply exploratory and research-driven. She grounds her teaching in robust traditional techniques while encouraging contemporary experimentation.

Victoria’s Artistic & Technical Background:

• Materiality Specialist: Highly experienced in sourcing and processing raw local materials to create custom, unique clay bodies and glazes.
• Cultural Heritage Preservation: Deeply influenced by native South American pottery traditions, Victoria specializes in recreating ancient pre-Columbian sonorous instruments—such as whistling jars, flutes, and ocarinas—exploring the beautiful intersection of sound, form, and history.

This course is delivered once a week over a period of 8 weeks.

Students will learn how to create bowls, vessels, mugs and other useful items. Decorative techniques will also be demonstrated.
