Introduction to Drawing and Painting One Day Workshop

Explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting in this practical one-day art workshop.

Working from a still-life arrangement, you will learn how tone, form and perspective can be used to create depth and structure in an artwork. Tutor demonstrations and guided exercises will introduce you to the different qualities of drawing and painting materials while encouraging you to experiment and develop your own style.

You can choose to focus on drawing or painting during the workshop. The class is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced students who would like to strengthen their techniques.

What you will learn

During the workshop, you will explore:

• Expressive drawing and painting techniques
• Tone, form and perspective
• Still-life observation and composition
• The characteristics of different art materials
• Ways to develop your own individual approach

What to bring

For drawing

Students who plan to draw should bring:

• Pencils or charcoal
• A packet of Mungyo chalk pastels or another brand of soft chalk pastels
• Do not bring oil pastels
• An eraser and ruler
• An A2 cartridge paper pad, or a smaller size if preferred

For acrylic painting

Students who plan to paint with acrylics should bring:

• Pencils or charcoal
• A set of acrylic paints
• A palette or plastic plate for mixing colours
• Square bristle brushes up to size 12
• An A2 cartridge paper pad, or a smaller size if preferred
• A screw-cap glass jar for water
• A rag
• An old shirt or apron

Acrylic paints are water-based, can be diluted with tap water and are recommended for beginners.

Additional materials for oil painting

Students using oil paints will also need to bring odourless solvent and a suitable screw-cap glass jar.

Basic art materials may be available from stores such as Kmart or discount variety shops. Professional-quality acrylic paints, including brands such as Matisse or Liquitex, are available from specialist art suppliers.

The approximate cost of basic materials is $35, although this will vary depending on the products and medium selected.

About the trainer

David Pavich

David Pavich is a landscape artist and experienced art tutor who teaches students ranging from complete beginners to advanced artists. He understands that new students may feel uncertain at first and aims to provide a supportive environment in which they can build their confidence and skills.

David graduated from Sydney’s National Art School in 1985 and has presented 20 solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas. He lived and exhibited in Paris from 1988 to 1993.

He has been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the Blake Prize, Paddington Art Prize, Gallipoli Art Prize, Gold Coast Art Prize, ANL Maritime Art Prize and Mosman Art Prize.

David has undertaken artist residencies at the Arthur Boyd Studio at Bundanon, Murray’s Cottage at Hill End, Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah and Gallery Lane Cove.

His work is represented in collections including Artbank, the Adzak Museum in Paris, the Bundanon Trust, the University of Sydney and the Siena Art Institute, as well as private collections in Australia, Europe, the United States and Japan.
