Building Resilence in Adults overview

This 4-week course is designed to equip participants with foundational tools and strategies to enhance personal resilience, develop emotional regulation, and navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and well-being. Through self-reflection, practical exercises, and interpersonal skills training, participants will build a resilient mindset and apply it in daily life.

Week 1: Understanding Resilience and Emotional Regulation

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Define resilience and identify its key components (emotional regulation, optimism, adaptability, and support systems).
  2. Reflect on personal experiences of resilience and recognise areas for growth. ​
  3. Understand the concept of emotional regulation and its importance in managing stress and adversity. ​
  4. Identify maladaptive coping strategies and explore healthier alternatives. ​
  5. Practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques to manage emotional responses effectively. ​

Week 2: Building a Resilient Mindset ​

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the concept of a growth mindset and its role in fostering resilience. ​
  2. Develop the ability to set realistic and achievable goals using the SMART framework. ​
  3. Recognise negative thought patterns and learn techniques to reframe them into positive or balanced thoughts. ​
  4. Apply cognitive restructuring techniques to improve emotional and mental well-being. ​
  5. Begin cultivating gratitude as a tool for fostering optimism and resilience.

Week 3: Social Support and Problem-Solving ​

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the importance of social support in building resilience and identify different types of support (emotional, practical, informational, appraisal). ​
  2. Map out personal support networks and identify opportunities to strengthen relationships. ​
  3. Develop active listening and boundary-setting skills to enhance interpersonal connections. ​
  4. Learn and apply the 4-step problem-solving model to address challenges effectively. ​
  5. Recognise the role of collaboration and community in fostering resilience. ​

Week 4: Applying Resilience in Daily Life ​

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Reflect on personal resilience stories and recognise the growth achieved through adversity. ​
  2. Understand how resilience can be applied in personal, professional, and community contexts. ​
  3. Brainstorm strategies to foster resilience in the workplace and community settings. ​
  4. Create a personalised resilience plan incorporating techniques learned throughout the program.
  5. Commit to ongoing personal growth and resilience-building practices, while inspiring others through shared experiences. ​
