Introduction to Working in Health & Aged Care overview

Turn your passion for helping others into a qualified career in the healthcare sector. This taster course will introduce you to the skills and knowledge to combine with your natural empathy as you support patients with healthcare needs. Work could involve multiple areas such as aged care, nursing assistance and allied health.

Upon successful completion of this short course you may choose to immediately continue your studies to complete either a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability),  HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care) or HLT33015 Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance.  You will receive credit for the units you have already successfully completed in this course.

 

What you need to know about this course

  • The course is delivered using a blended learning model which includes timetabled classroom attendance two evenings per week over 7 weeks and weekly flexible directed self study hours. An additional day will be required to complete the first aid course, either Saturday 14 June or Friday 27 June 2025.
  • Students will need to allow time during the course for directed self study for the completion of learning and assessment tasks.
  • The course is delivered in the College’s fully equipped training room by our qualified and industry experienced trainer/assessor.
  • 4 units of competency will be studied during this short course.
  • A timetable will be provided on course commencement.

The course comprises two classroom based sessions over a seven week period and additional self study hours. The training will be delivered in the College’s fully equipped nursing training room by our qualified and industry experienced trainer/assessor. If you choose, you can continue at the end of this short course to complete either Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability), Certificate III in Health Services Assistance or Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance in Term 3 2025, all of which are fully funded under NSW Fee Free funding.

Are there Assessments?

  • Competency based assessment of the four units of competency in this course will be conducted through a mix of assessment methods including case studies, theory tasks and practical demonstration.
  • You will receive clear assessment instructions and an opportunity will be provided for resubmission of assessments if required.

  • Completion of an online NBMC English language, literacy and numeracy quiz to determine that you have appropriate skills to successfully complete the course.

Assessments are made against units of competency.

As part of this course you will be completing the accredited units:

  • Work with diverse people (CHCDIV001)
  • Communicate and work in health or community services (CHCCOM005)
  • Work with people with mental health issues (CHCMHS001)
  • Provide First Aid (HLTAID011)

On successful completion of the assessment tasks associated with this unit, a Statement of Attainment will be issued.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – is a means of measuring skills acquired through work or life experiences or through qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Any student who believes they may be eligible for RPL must apply for this at least two weeks prior to the course commencing. If you apply after the course commences it may not be accepted.

From 1 January 2015 it is a requirement of the Federal Government that all students undertaking nationally recognised training will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This involves an easy online application. See USI Fact Sheet for information on how to apply for a USI go to the Unique Student Identifier (USI) Website for additional information.

Please ensure when completing your enrolment information, that the details relating to your name are identical to those on the identification evidence (eg passport or driver’s licence) used when creating your USI, eg no abbreviations or nicknames should be used. Once created, it is important that you keep a record of your USI and access to your accredited training records in a safe place. You will need this information for any future enrolments into accredited training in Australia. Please contact the College on 9970 1000 if you require assistance

This short course provides a pathway to completing Certificate III in Individual Support CHC33021, Certificate III in Health Services Assistance HLT33115 or Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance HLT33021. Completion of Certificate III in Individual Support will allow you to work in a variety of caring roles either facility based or in community care. Certificate III in Health Services Assistance will allow you to work as a nursing assistant in a variety of health care settings including hospitals and other care facilities. Completion of Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance HLT33015 will allow you to work in a role supporting physios, podiatrists or speech pathologists in a range of settings like hospitals, medical practices, mental health clinics, schools, aged care facilities or in a community health organisation.

All NBMC Trainers/Assessors are current industry professionals with the required qualifications to deliver and assess this course. Trainers draw upon and share their own experiences in the industry to ensure that the training delivered to you is current and relevant.
