Crash Course in Writing and Recording your Song for Beginners

Course Outline

Setting up your computer to record
Understand the basic elements that make up a song
Compose your own song
Understand the basics of music recording, using digital (virtual piano, synthesizers etc.) and analog (voice, guitar, etc.)
Record your song using digital instruments

Please Bring:

  • Laptop computer, with Ableton Live software installed (we can help you set this up prior to starting). There is a 30 day free trial download available at https://www.ableton.com/en/trial/
  • At least a basic level of skill with using your laptop would be preferred
  • Any other music recording devices (MIDI Keyboard, Audio Interface) you would like to learn how to use, please feel free to bring with you. We will endeavour to incorporate them into your song recording

About the Tutor

Tate is an experienced audio engineer, producer, and musician, with 10 years playing and recording music. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Audio Production from SAE Institute, with a recording internship for a prestigious recording studio in Sydney, as well as teaching qualifications and experience. Tate dedicates his time to making his own music, and runs a recording studio teaching program for underprivileged youths experiencing homelessness. Tate’s enthusiasm for music recording and patience/ability to teach complex recording down to a basic level, allows for students with little to no music experience be able to have a go and express their musical ideas
